Man to die by hanging for killing his father
An Ado-Ekiti High Court has sentenced a man, Blessing Olumakinde, to
death by hanging for killing his father, Benson Egunlae, over
inheritance.
The state Chief Judge, Justice Ayodeji Daramola, who delivered the
judgment, held that the evidence before the court showed that the
accused was guilty of murder as charged.
He noted that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable
doubt against the convict hence he should be hanged by the neck until
life goes out of him.
The late father of the convict had six wives and 18 children who were locked on the sharing of his parcels of land.
Dissatisfied with the share allotted to him, Blessing, 47, reportedly
traced his father and attacked him with a cutlass and an axe, killing
him in the process and ran away.
His siblings were shocked to meet their father in the pool of his
blood. Egunlae was taken to the hospital where he was confirmed dead.
After committing the murder, the convict ran away for six months
before turning himself over to the Police after which he was arraigned
on a one-count charge of murder.
The state was represented by the Attorney-General and Commissioner
for Justice, Owoseni Ajayi, while the accused was represented by
Morakinyo Ogele.
The prosecution called two witnesses during the trial while the convict testified in his own defence.
Exhibits including the axe and cutlass the accused used to stab his
father in the head and the chest and the pictures of the scene were
tendered and admitted.
The convict in his confessional statement to the Police admitted killing his father in the hut in their farm.-The Authority
