2 arrested for murder of vigilante in Delta
Security operatives in Delta State have arrested a 22-year-old man and his mother at Ukpude-Aviara community in connection with an alleged killing of Denis Omoefe, member of a vigilante group, the Vigilante Group of Nigeria.
It was gathered that the deceased was stabbed to death by one Mr Innocent who had risen in defense of a suspected bandit, his friend who was accused of stealing the community’s property.
A source in the area who pleaded anonymity, said, Denis and his colleagues had arrested a man who is friend to Innocent for stealing the community solar streetlights and batteries and was being interrogated at the community town hall.
During the investigation and his interrogation, an argument ensued between the deceased and his killer who was defending the culprit-friend for a soft landing which the deceased objected. Innocent took the issue personal and he threatened to deal with him.
According to the source, the matter took a different turn when the mother of Innocent locked the wife of the deceased out of their apartment for daring to apprehend their family friend and sensing danger, the deceased pleaded with a friend who accompanied him home.
Speaking further, the source said that Innocent emerged from nowhere with a dagger and stabbed Denis in the stomach and disappeared. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for medication but died the next day due to excessive bleeding.
The incident has thrown Ukpude-Aviara community into confusion as members of the community have been discussing the matter in hush tones; movement within the area have been restricted to avoid breakdown of law and order.
When contacted, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Aniamaka confirmed the incident.
